Access Control Electric Locking

Access Control Electric Locking products includes, amongst other products, electric releases, overhead magnets and electric locks.

Most commonly used with an access control system these days is an overhead magnet.  This mainly due to their simplicity of fitting.  However they are not suitable for every application due to the fact that they may restrict the clear head height if mounted on the push side of the door.

And also there are regulations regarding to their installation on fire doors. Everything fitted to a fire door that is critical to its operation should have a fire test certificate to EN1634-1.  This includes the hinges, door closer and, of course, the locking hardware.  Not many electromagnets have a fire test and even then we have to look at whether it is suitable foe that particular door.

Electric releases are also generally, with a few very specific exceptions. not suitable for fire doors.  This is due to the installation requiring a section of the frame cutting away to allow the latch to move out.

One should also consider the means of escape.  Any door that forms part of the fire escape route from the building should have a lock that is certified to either BS EN179 or EN 1125.  These standards require a mechanical operation which isn’t possible with an electromagnet as there’s a push button release.

If it is a fire door then perhaps a solenoid lock may be the best choice as you can have everything you need within one lock; fire safety and escape
